Sharing your home with a dog can be a magical experience. You have a companion by your side when you’re in the mood to watch television, go out for a long walk, or spend the night on the porch enjoying the weather. This is especially true if you own a Shih Tzu. They were bred to be companions of Chinese royalty, and once they made their way around the world, their loyal and affectionate ways secured them a place in people’s hearts.

When dog owners are feeling down or simply need to destress, a cuddle from their best friend is the answer. But does a Shih Tzu like to cuddle? You’re in luck if you have a Shih Tzu in your home and enjoy cuddling with your canine best pals. In most situations, a Shih Tzu would love a cuddle from their loving owner. However, not every Shih Tzu is a fan of cuddling. While most are game to cuddle up and spend time with their people, you will find a few who dislike it due to individual temperament, past experiences, or comfort preferences. In this article, we’ll discuss Shih Tzus and cuddling, so you’ll know what to expect when spending your life with a Shih Tzu.

Shih Tzus and Cuddles

With a history of being companions to humans, it isn’t surprising that most Shih Tzus enjoy showing their owners lots of love and attention. Some breeds, like the Shih Tzu, are considered lap dogs because of their fondness for their owners.

If their owners allow it, they’ll gladly spend as much time as possible on their lap, by their side, or trailing behind them as they journey through the house. This sweet disposition is one of the many reasons most Shih Tzus enjoy cuddles. But it’s not the only reason. Let’s take a look at a few of the other reasons why a Shih Tzu may like to cuddle.

Strong Bonds

With Shih Tzus being so loving and loyal to their owners, it’s unsurprising that they can form strong bonds with them. This bond can provide a sense of security, meaning the Shih Tzu may seek out their owner for comfort, especially in unfamiliar or stressful situations. While your pup could be open to cuddles any time throughout the day, they may come seeking their own when they need comfort.

Warmth

In case you didn’t notice, Shih Tzus are small dogs. Sure, they have luxurious hair, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t going to get cold from time to time. Cuddling may help them retain warmth, although healthy dogs typically regulate their body temperature well in appropriate environments. So don’t be surprised to find your Shih Tzu up for a cuddle when the weather turns chilly.

Instincts

Shih Tzus may also enjoy cuddling due to their instincts. As puppies, dogs cuddle with their mothers for nourishment, protection, and warmth. Your dog may retain some of these early-life social bonding behaviors, which can contribute to seeking close contact with familiar people.

Do All Shih Tzus Like to Cuddle?

While dogs within the same breed often share some general tendencies, each has a unique personality. As mentioned, most Shih Tzus are known to enjoy interactions like cuddles with their families. That doesn’t mean every dog will feel the same way. There are Shih Tzus out there who aren’t cuddlers. You’ll also notice that younger Shih Tzus aren’t as focused on cuddling and loving their owners as they are on playing. You may see all that change, however, as the dog ages.

Summary

Shih Tzus are amazing dogs that are full of love and loyalty. While every dog has a unique personality, overall, the Shih Tzu is generally considered an affectionate breed that often enjoys close contact with their owners. If you’re looking for an affectionate dog breed to spend your days with, a Shih Tzu can be a great choice.
